Electric Vehicles and Related Infrastructure for Southeast Asia
The government of Malaysia is pushing to accelerate the roll-out of electric vehicles as part of its carbon neutrality goals but the main obstacle lies in the lack of supporting infrastructure. It was announced in 2022 plans to install 10,000 electric vehicle charging stations by 2025. New directives offer incentives not only for importing and buying electric vehicles, but also for manufacturing and developing critical components such as battery management system, battery pack and capacity, on-board charging, charging infrastructure and modular battery swapping technology.
Meanwhile, the Philippines enacted the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) in 2022 and created a Comprehensive Electric Vehicle Industry Roadmap (CREVI). This will serve as the national development plan for the EV industry to accelerate the development, commercialization and use of EVs in the country. It is one of the most comprehensive government roadmaps in the country and Austrian companies can take advantage of the tax and non-tax incentives made available under EVIDA, including the zero tariff for electric vehicles.
As the world's largest nickel producer, Indonesia is striving to become the world market leader in the production of batteries for electric vehicles. This is facilitated by the establishment of Indonesia Battery Corporations (IBC), which is still actively seeking investors to build an integrated EV battery industry - from mining the raw materials needed to battery recycling plants. Tax incentives are offered for investors in this area, from which Austrian companies can benefit. In the national roadmap for the automotive industry, the Ministry of Industry stipulates a 20% share of battery-powered electric vehicles by 2025. It has started to provide cash and tax incentives for new purchases of EVs with at least 40% local content. The construction of charging and exchange stations goes hand in hand with this development.
